Civic Data Lab

Data for the common good – FROM civil society, FOR civil society. The consortium of the German Informatics Society (GI), CorrelAid and the German Caritas Association has been setting up the Civic Data Lab (CDL) since July 2023. It was commissioned by the Federal Ministry for Education, Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMBFSFJ). The consortium enables civil society stakeholders to better achieve their goals for the common good through data collection, analysis and exchange.

Goal and target groups

The CDL supports organised and non-organised civil society stakeholders to effectively collect and process data. Furthermore, they receive help to evaluate, link, use and make available data from their own and external sources. Using practical examples of implementation, the CDL reduces barriers to data-driven social innovation. It increases cooperation between civil society organisations around data.

What we offer

The CDL

  • provides expert advice on legal, technical and data-related issues,
  • connects civil society actors, academics, stakeholders and communities,
  • transfers knowledge,
  • supports the implementation of data projects,
  • bundles and develops educational offers in the field of Civic Data for civil society and
  • implements data-driven services for the common good.

What we offer in detail

Civic Data Community: The CDL connects, supports and activates people involved in Civic Data – creating a community of practice. It collects and shares knowledge and experience and jointly develops new ideas in a lab. Furthermore, it identifies training needs from civil society and forwards these to the Civic Data Academy.

Civic Data Academy: Data literacy is a prerequisite for being able to responsibly handle data from one's own field of work and use it for the common good. The Civic Data Lab supports this by making existing data-related learning and training opportunities for civil society easily accessible. It classifies them according to common criteria. If offers and formats are missing, the CDL will develop them as needed and make them available for free – at all levels, online and face-to-face, synchronous and asynchronous.

The catalogue of recommended and available offers is available on the Civic Data Lab website (in German) and is constantly growing according to the respective user requirements.

Civic Data support and advice: The CDL will implement new relatable, data-driven services for the common good – together with the respective civil society stakeholders who contribute their ideas. Challenges and practical issues can only be overcome through concrete implementations. The Civic Data Lab therefore focuses on addressing questions of interoperability of data applications and standardisation within civil society. The results and lessons learned will be presented transparently to the community and civil society and made available for further use.
